About the Library
The Pell Marine Science Library is located in Narragansett, Rhode Island on the Narragansett Bay Campus of the University of Rhode Island (6 miles east of the University Library in Kingston, RI).
Prior to the construction of the original Pell Library, books and research materials were kept in a variety of offices, consolidating in what used to be a house on campus in the 1940’s. In January 1959, a fire broke out in the house, destroying most of the collection. The original Pell Library, named after Senator Claiborne Pell, author of Sea Grant legislation and a longtime champion of ocean research and preservation, was dedicated in 1968. The building anchored the west end of the quadrangle on the Narragansett Bay Campus. The current Pell Marine Sciences Library is on the top floor of the Ocean Science and Exploration Center, which was built in 2009. The Pell Library houses more than 66 thousand volumes, including books, journals, theses, maps, atlases, digital media, and a special collections area for rare books. The Pell Library also features spectacular views of Narragansett Bay.
