Thank you, Captain

Endeavor’s outgoing captain Everett “Rhett” McMunn

Captain Everett “Rhett” McMunn has served as R/V Endeavor’s master for more than 30 years. He is retiring as the longest serving captain of any vessel in the nation’s academic fleet.

Director of Marine Operations Tom Glennon observed: “Having worked closely with Captain McMunn for the past two decades, I am continuously impressed with his range of knowledge in all aspects of marine operations. I have always been able to rely on Rhett to help support Endeavor.”

Dave Palazzetti, Director of Narragansett Bay Campus Facilities and Operations and himself a retired U.S. Coast Guard officer, adds: “Rhett’s ability to assess the situation and balance what can safely be completed without sacrificing the necessary sample collections is legendary throughout the oceanographic community.”

“Since arriving in 1982, Rhett has made major contributions to our oceanographic program and the reputation of GSO, URI and Rhode Island. He has been a wonderful ambassador to visiting scientists and students and a mentor to countless scientists and mariners over the course of his career,” observed Dean Emeritus Bruce Corliss.

On the occasion of his retirement, the entire GSO community of scientists, faculty, students, alumni and staff extends its heartfelt gratitude to Captain McMunn.
