RV Endeavor: Wet Lab

The Wet Lab is a 400 ft2 general purpose research laboratory. As the name would imply, the Wet Lab is often used for sampling seawater and mud samples from the ocean floor. This type of work can get very messy so everything in this lab is waterproofed and able to be hosed down after a busy cruise. Features of Endeavor’s laboratories include freshwater and seawater sinks, strut channel for mounting heavy equipment, and connections to the ship’s data network and sensor feeds. The lab tables on the Endeavor (and most other academic research vessels) are generally constructed of plywood sheets. The purpose of this is to allow visiting scientists to screw down and strap in their often expensive equipment so it stays put when the weather gets nautical! Threaded sockets are embedded in the deck (floor) of each laboratory which are also used to secure equipment.
