Angklung Resources

In the Summer of 2022 the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, Washington DC  gave the URI Music Department four sets of angklung chimes along with traditional hats and scarves and some instructional materials.  Each angklung chime is a pair of two or a group of three carved bamboo tubes hung in a frame with a rod that runs through the upper portion of each tube.  The frame is held by the player’s two hands and the tone is created by shaking the frame causing the tubes to rattle back and forth along the rod.

For the paired angklung (the type donated to the Music Department) each chime produces a tone and its higher octave. There are eight angklung pairs in a set, tuned to create a diatonic major scale — C major for the URI sets.  Angklungs are communal instruments, like handbells.  Each player sounds their single angklung in a sequence with others to create the composite melody or chordal accompaniment.  A set of eight angklungs can also be played by one person using the instrument stands that came with the donation.
