URI has resources in digital and big data including Senator Claiborne Pell’s archive covering the 36 years he served as U.S. Senator from Rhode Island, housed at the URI library, Special Collections and Archives. The URI Center for the Humanities and the Library have started a project to better understand and digitize this archive. Along with digital innovations in the Library, URI has been building faculty strength in Digital Humanities, and has established the Big Data and High Performance Computing Collaborative. We will also reach beyond URI: many cultural institutions in our region have untapped archives – treasure troves of unexamined cultural and historical materials in need of analysis.
