Fall Semester Classes begin Monday, September 16. If you haven’t registered yet, give us a call at 401.874.4197. You can view the list of CLOSED CLASSES by CLICKING HERE. Remember to add your name to the Wait List. There are always cancellations and sometimes we are able to add another session of the class.
PARKING REMINDER: OLLI members can park in Lot#21 in front of our building, Lot #6 Staff side of Fine Arts Lot, and in the Plains Rd parking lot. If you park anywhere else on campus you risk a $50 parking ticket.

Memberships are non-refundable.
- To withdraw from a class and receive a full refund or credit, you must notify the OLLI office at least two weeks before the start of the class. Call the office at 401-874-4197 or email olli@uri.edu.
- No- shows forfeit their course fees.
- Day trips and special tours are prepaid so there are no refunds for cancellation or withdrawal.
- Classes that do not meet minimum student registration numbers are subject to cancellation.
- OLLI follows the University’s policy of canceling classes for certain holidays and because of inclement weather.
REMINDER: The students are back so expect more traffic on route 138 and adjacent roads. Give yourself a little extra time arriving for your class!
PARKING UPDATE – The URI parking system is now able to take your car registration information. If you provided our office with your information, you will receive an email confirmation from URI Parking that it has been entered. Just be sure to have this completed prior to attending your first class this fall. We are happy to register your vehicle for you. Just give the office a call and provide your license plate number, along with the make, model and color of your vehicle.
New members please know that it can take up to 2 weeks before your OLLI Information is entered into the URI parking system. Please don’t call Parking Services. URI HONORS COLLOQUIUM PRESENTS ‘DEMOCRACY IN PERIL’
This year, the 61st annual Honors Colloquium will provide an opportunity for scholars, experts, and the URI community to engage in a thoughtful and informed dialogue on the meaning, importance of, and risks to, democracy. The annual university-wide forum is free and open to the public. Lectures will be held most Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Edwards Hall and will be streamed online. Sleep disturbances are common as people get older, and a growing number of studies indicate that they are linked to a greater risk of poor health outcomes, including cognitive and functional decline, and even Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Spira will discuss research in these areas and the implications of good sleep for healthy aging.
Adam Spira is Professor and Vice Chair for Research and Faculty in the Department of Mental Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He has a joint appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and is core faculty of the Johns Hopkins Center on Aging and Health.
THE PREMIERE OF “OPTICS OF AGING”: CHALLENGING AGEISM THROUGH THE STORIES OF RHODE ISLAND’S OLDER ADULTS– On October 15, 2024, the Providence Public Library will host the premiere of Optics of Aging, a new documentary by filmmaker Michelle Le Brun. This 55-minute film focuses on the lives of five older adults in Rhode Island, highlighting their contributions to the state and exploring the complex realities of aging. The film, which took three years to complete, is supported by The Rhode Island Foundation, The Robertson Foundation, the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, and the Providence Public Library.
The film profiles five individuals whose lives and work have had a lasting impact on Rhode Island. By focusing on their personal stories, Le Brun aims to challenge the negative assumptions about aging and offer a more nuanced perspective on what it means to grow older. These individuals, ranging in age from their 70s to their 90s, offer a diverse set of perspectives on aging. Their stories illustrate that aging is not a uniform experience but is instead shaped by personal history, social context, and individual resilience. Through their narratives, Optics of Aging challenges the monolithic view of old age and highlights the ongoing contributions of older adults to society.
