WATERCOLOR PRACTICES with Pike Powers
Thursdays, April 4, 11, 18, 25, 12:00PM-2:00PM $45 Max: 16
Course Description: Let’s take apart some basics to creating imagery in watercolor. Aimed at the novice, exercises and demonstrations will cover a wide range of practical and playful approaches to painting. In a watercolor journal we’ll record our explorations and experiments to build a practical guide for creating finished paintings. Steps include: Observation; compose light and shadow; sketch in pencil; mix colors from primaries; mop on washes; swish colors and play with tools in addition to brushes. Bring in small natural objects to begin our watercolor journey.
Supplies Needed:
- Bring in small natural objects to begin our watercolor journey.
- Come with materials from the list. If not sure what to buy, wait til first class.
- ‘Watercolor’ paper pad or book-100% cotton preferred, 90-140#, 11 x 15 inch or smaller.
- Small (5-8 colors) set of Watercolor Paints -Tubes preferred.
- ‘Watercolor’ Brushes: (not for acrylics) At least one 1/4″ round pointed: one “mop” brush (round at least 1″ very very soft) and one or two smaller brushes round or flat brushes.
- Pallet for paint mixing-plastic Tupperware lids work.
- Pencils and soft eraser
- Drafting or painter’s tape
Pike Powers takes a multipronged approach to her creative career. She has exhibited her award-winning artwork in painting, glass, and mixed-material sculpture internationally. She was a foundation professor at Parsons School of Design, art director of Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, and past executive director of Boca Grande Art Alliance, FL. Powers received her B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design and M.F.A. from Yale University. At home in her native Rhode Island, she freelances in design, consulting, and teaching.

NATASHA TRETHEWEY TO GIVE READING ON APRIL 4– The University of Rhode Island will host Natasha Trethewey, a Pulitzer Prize winner and two-term U.S. poet laureate, on Thursday, April 4, as part of National Poetry Month. Trethewey will read from her 2018 poetry collection “Monument: Poems New & Selected,” which was longlisted for the National Book Award, at 5 p.m. in the Galanti Lounge of the Carothers Library and Learning Commons, 15 Lippitt Road, Kingston. There will also be a question and answer session. The event is free and open to the public. The Physical Therapy Department of the URI College of Health Sciences is looking for volunteers to participate in the following three studies:
- If you’ve had a stroke, you may participate in a study to examine how soft tissue mobilization influences the nervous system. Click here to see the informational flyer about this study.
- If you’ve had a total knee replacement in the past 6-24 months, you may participate in a study of physical activity to assess your mobility, balance, strength and range of motion. Click here to see the informational flyer about this study.

AUDUBON BUTTERFLY MONITORING PROJECT Have you ever wanted to help pollinators? Are you interested in community-science? The Audubon Society of Rhode Island is looking for volunteers interested in being a part of a community-science based project this Summer. The project involves monitoring Monarch butterflies and other butterfly species on coastal Audubon properties from May through July. To prepare our volunteers, we will be holding virtual training sessions on April 18th and 23rd from 7 PM to 9 PM via Zoom. They will also be holding in-person training sessions on April 27th and May 3rd from 10 AM to 12 PM. In-person training will be held at the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium in Bristol. They ask that you attend one virtual and one in-person training session. For more information and to register, please click here.
INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE Dr. Malaika Edwards, an Assistant Professor at the University of Houston, is conducting a study on organizational preparedness for the aging workforce, from a retiree perspective, and we would like to invite you to participate in the study. The study is open to retirees between the ages of 54 and 74, who were employed at the Supervisory/ Managerial level and above at the time of their retirement. Retirees who are currently working (full-time or otherwise) and retirees who worked during the first two years after retirement are also being invited to participate.
