CLASS SPOTLIGHT: Free class– Join Rob Rock on Tuesday, October 25, from 2:00PM to 3:30PM for a discussion on voting in Rhode Island. Discussion will include: what does the RI Department of State do to encourage people to exercise their right to vote in a timely and safe manner? How does redistricting happen? Learn about the election processes that are designed to facilitate citizen participation and measures in place to prevent voter fraud. Register online or call 401-874-4197.

The Tech Committee invites you to join this month’s Special Interest Group, Let’s Talk Technology conversation on The Public Library Online: Resources you can use from home. 

You might be surprised by everything your public libraries have to offer online. Learn how to access your library account and see your reading history, research genealogy, and businesses, take tech courses, learn a new language, download books, music, and movies, and more…. all from the comfort of your home. Sarah Ornstein, Director of the Cross Mills Library in Charlestown, will help you navigate the E-Zone. Bring questions and experiences to share as we explore this topic.

We’ll review our current programs, and our special interest groups all while exploring and becoming more familiar with our OLLI website and registration software. Plenty of time for Q & A. OLLI Opportunity for Current and Former Business Owners

Are you a current or former business owner? Don’t miss this opportunity to meet with students and discuss the attitudes about entrepreneurship being a young person’s game, and how we might reframe that using perspectives from “endrepreneurs.” Nancy Forster-Holt, Assistant Professor, URI College of Business, describes an “Endrepreneur” as a business owner who is or is near to retirement. In this workshop you can already be retired.

A brief survey will be emailed to those who register in advance of the workshop.

GREAT DECISIONS FOREIGN POLICY DISCUSSION 2023 GROUP at OLLI will begin in February. This Special Interest Group meets monthly for 8 months and is FREE to all members who register. Members must register for each class separately online. For the Winter semester, you can register for the January, February and March discussions. Details on registration will be in our Winter Course Catalog. Advance orders for the briefing book will be ordered through the OLLI office. If you order in advance as a group the individual book fee will be $30.00 (a savings of $5.00) CHECKS only, will be accepted made payable to URI. In the memo line write Great Decisions. Drop these off to the office (attn: Beth Leconte) or mail to the OLLI office at 210 Flagg Rd, Rm 212, Kingston, RI 02881. RHODY OUTPOST- RESTOCKTOBER

It is RESTOCKTOBER month at Rhody Outpost and OLLI members are encouraged to donate the following items during the month of October.

  • PAPER AND PERSONAL PRODUCTS  (toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, hand lotion, ChapStick, etc.)
  • GIFT CARDS are always welcome to local grocery stores, Job Lot, and Walmart.

OLLI at the University of South Dakota invites you to Bats – Making the Case for Myotis on ZOOM

Bats – love them or hate them? This class will make the case for myotis – BATS! Silka Kempema, wildlife biologist for SD Game, Fish and Parks, will teach us about bat biology, what bats live in SD, bat diseases and the benefit of bats in your neighborhood. The Center for the Humanities has two exciting events planned for Wednesday Oct. 26.  

  • At 12 pm, URI Languages Professor Susana de los Heros will give a brown bag presentation on “Humor in ‘Jane the Virgin,’ the New Telenovela.” The presentation will take place in the Hardge Forum of the Multicultural Center and be broadcast on Zoom.   • At 4 pm, History Professor Rosalyn LaPier (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) will give a talk in our Environmental Humanities lecture series on “Indigenous Women’s Knowledge: Prairies, Power and Plants.” The talk (sponsored by the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies as its annual Eleanor Carlson Lecture) will take place in the Hope Room of the Higgins Welcome Center and be livestreamed.
