For the past eleven years the Ocean State Writing Conference has brought accomplished and award-winning writers to the campus of the University of Rhode Island. We offer quality workshops, readings, master classes and panels. We’ve been honored to host a wide array of authors, including journalist Masha Gessen, playwright Ayad Akhtar, graphic novelist Alison Bechdel, poets Major Jackson and Richard Blanco, and novelists Julianna Baggot and Jennifer Egan.
We believe that there is inspiration in conversation, in the shared experience of a workshop, a panel discussion or one-on-one consultation with a writer. We strive to cultivate an atmosphere of inquiry, encouragement, and warmth. At the conference, you will meet writers of all levels and have the opportunity to come together to engage in the one passion we all share: creative writing.
Workshops
The Ocean State Writing Conference gives workshop participants eight contact hours with instructors in fiction, poetry or creative nonfiction. In a setting that is both intimate and supportive, participants will learn through craft lessons, writing exercises and group critiques.
Craft Session and Panel Discussions
Craft sessions and panel discussions focus on a particular aspect or approach to writing. In the publishing panel, we bring editors, agents and writers together to offer a complete picture of the industry. We open up the floor to participant questions and comments, creating a two-way flow of interest and information.
Day Passes
Day passes give those who can’t attend a workshop the opportunity to come and participate in the craft sessions, readings and panel discussions. You will meet and connect with fellow writers in a supportive environment.
Readings
Each of our featured writers will give a short, inspirational craft talk and a reading. Readings are followed by a book signing.
We also offer conference attendees the opportunity to read from their own work at the Participant Reading on the final afternoon of the conference. At this event, you will be able to hear your work from fellow workshop participants and share your own.
