Summer 2026 Sailing Program

Summer 2026 Sailing Program will go on sale on Wednesday, February 11 @10 for ALL URI Faculty/Staff at the Mackal Field House; and 1pm for all other patrons, in-person at the Mackal Field House or online.

Sailing is one of the few sports where size, physical strength, and gender, are equalized on the water. The URI instructional program is based on camaraderie, respect, fun, and learning. It is our hope that the skills learned in our programs will provide the foundation to learn lifelong skills.

Our Team is dedicated to promoting recreational sailing, proper instruction, water safety, and environmental responsibility in a friendly, welcoming environment. On behalf of the Sailing Staff, Instructors, and the Department of Campus Recreation we are excited that you choose to spend the summer with us.

Tadpole
Ages: 6 & 7
A camp for the youngest of sailors, filled with sailing basics and age-appropriate outdoor ecology. Throughout the day, campers will engage in hands-on activities and sail on the bay. Prerequisites: Campers should be prepared to do a brief swim check while wearing a personal flotation device (PFD).

Learn-to-Sail Camp – Beginners
Ages: 8-17
Campers will learn the basics of rigging, points of sail, sailing maneuvers, safety, and recovery in a safe, fun environment. Certified instructors lead a variety of land- and water-based activities designed to promote comfort and independence in the boat. This camp is open to all sailors looking for an introduction to sailing or to brush up on skills learned last year.  Prerequisites: Basic swimming proficiency.

Learn-to-Sail Camp – Intermediate
Ages: 12-17
This camp is a perfect follow-up to the Beginners Camp, or, an ideal choice for young sailors who are already comfortable with the basics. Following a review of nomenclature and basic rigging, safety, and sailing maneuvers, sailors will advance to on-the-water activities that consolidate existing skills and teach new ones during longer sails. Prerequisites: Successful completion of Beginners Camp. Able to right a capsized boat. Able to execute controlled tacks and jibes. Knowledgeable of basic sail trim. Ages 9-12 per Sailing Coordinator approval.

Watersports Adventures
Ages: 8-17
Each week campers will explore the water from a variety of watercrafts, including kayaks, paddleboards,  and possibly sailboats. Campers enjoy excursions to interesting locations along the waterfront as well as learning some STEM education lessons along the way.

Adult Beginner
Ages: 18+
Learn a new, environmentally-friendly skill that can last a lifetime. Adult beginner sailing classes focus on safety, basic boating terminology, wind awareness, steering, and sail handling. Taught in small, (mostly) stable boats, these courses build your confidence and provide the fundamental knowledge needed to eventually sail on your own. It’s an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and connect with the water, regardless of your prior experience.

Adult Intermediate
Ages: 18+
Move beyond the basics and gain the confidence to take the helm in diverse conditions. Adult intermediate sailing is designed for those comfortable with fundamental skills who are ready for a higher level of self-reliance and boat control.  Learn how to use sail shape controls, tell-tales, and heel control to maximize boat speed and efficiency.

Adult Open
Ages: 18+
No matter your skill level, we will accommodate beginner and intermediate sailors in this group and differentiate instruction based on the class makeup.

Summer Sailing Program Fleet

The 8′ Optimist Pram is a perfect boat for beginner sailors. The Optimist is easily sailed by our young sailors due to its wide stable hull, making it hard to tip over. Water automatically drains from the boat, making it safe to sail, and are appealing in their multiple color options. The Optimist is made of a safe, virtually unbreakable plastic that is very forgiving when you bump other boats or land at the dock.

The RS Quest is a 14′ dinghy that can accommodate two or more sailors depending on their size. It’s simple, fun, and stable to sail, and can be used by older beginners all the way through our more advanced sailors. The boom is high above people’s head for safety, and the boat is also made with rotomoulded plastic. That means you can bump into things–but our skilled sailing instructors will teach you how to not do that!
