Graduate Training

The Counseling Center at the University of Rhode Island is offering a number of training opportunities for clinical graduate students. The graduate training programs were established to underscore the value and priority that the Counseling Center places on high quality training in professional preparation, and offers supervised experiences in individual and group clinical formats, crisis intervention, outreach, consultation/education, and other activities appropriate to the University setting. The experiences include a year-long training seminar, case conference, and both individual and group supervision. Graduate Assistantships are extended to advanced graduate students in Clinical Psychology at URI. Internship and practicum experiences are offered to a variety of other colleges and disciplines.

The Counseling Center is the mental health resource for the approximately 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students at the University. Students use our services for a variety of problems. Typical presenting problems include interpersonal concerns, depression, anxiety, eating and body image concerns, substance misuse, and academic performance difficulties, among others.

The traineeships will begin Monday, August 26, 2024 and continue until May 9, 2025, with some leave for vacation. Depending upon what level of training experience a student is looking for, it may involve a commitment of 10-20 working hours per week. Participation in all phases of the agency’s delivery system is expected of each trainee, including occasional attendance at staff meetings.

The remuneration for the academic year for URI Graduate Assistant students ranges from $21,480 – 23,290 plus tuition waiver, health insurance, sick leave and vacation leave.

Application and Selection

An application for the Counseling Center’s training experiences can be found here: 2024 Graduate trainee application. All application materials (application form, transcript, resume, and two or three references) should be submitted to michaelstarkey@uri.edu. Letters of recommendation can be sent directly via email by the referee.

Review of applications will begin on January 09, 2024 and continue until position is filled. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

All documents will be reviewed following the close of the application period, and a limited number of applicants will be invited for interviews. The positions will continue to be awarded until all positions have been filled.  The number of positions will be dependent upon space and availability of supervision.

Candidates who are invited for an interview can expect to meet with Counseling Center clinical staff. Invited candidates should prepare a brief (approximately 10 minute) case presentation for this meeting. The purpose of the interview is to become better acquainted with each candidate’s clinical interests, experience, and motivation for seeking the position. Questions can be directed to Dr. Michael Starkey, Assistant Director, Counseling and Training at (401) 874-2288 or michaelstarkey@uri.edu.
