Sailing Team

The URI Sailing team has a strong tradition of competitive excellence and a rich history of alumni that includes 27 All-Americans, several Olympians and America’s Cup Sailors.  The team competes in the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) and sails out of the Robert Paul Arrigan Sailing Center located on the Salt Pond. The sailing fleet includes 18 new FJ’s, 8 420’s and multiple coach boats.

Do you hold tryouts?

  • Sometimes

When are tryouts?

  • Tryouts are during the first or second week of the Fall Semester.

What gear is required for tryouts?

  • Clothes that will keep you warm and can get wet.

How many athletes do you keep on your roster?

  • 40

How many athletes do you anticipate adding after tryouts?

  • It varies from year to year but typically ranges from 5 to 10.

How often does your team practice?

  • Four times a week: Tuesday-Friday (2:30pm-6:30pm)

Where does your team practice/play/compete?

  • We practice at the URI Sailing Center. We compete up and down the East Coast.

How far does your team travel for competitions?

  • We travel frequently within New England and occasionally travel nationally for more significant events.

Who does your team compete against?

  • We compete against teams in the NEISA conference.

How do athletes get to games?

  • We carpool using personal vehicles or rental vehicles; however, we sometimes fly when we travel greater distances.

Does your team collect dues? If so, how much?

  • Yes. We collect dues once per semester. Semesterly dues are $450 per person

Aside from practices and competitions, what other commitments are expected from members of the team?

  • We hold team lifts in the weight room once or twice a week. We also hold weekly team meetings on Tuesdays at 7pm.

How competitive is your team?

  • Highly Competitive. Some of the teams we compete against are the Varsity programs from their schools.
