Personal Training Policies

  • Members interested in Personal Training can purchase a fitness assessment on our uri.edu Campus Rec website to get started.
  • Only personal training sessions conducted by authorized Campus Recreation trainers are permitted. External personal training is not allowed within the facilities. This policy ensures the highest quality of guidance and support for all our members.
  • Access to the personal training services is available to currently enrolled students, faculty, staff, family of faculty or staff, and community members with a membership.
  • All participants must complete a personal training intake form, informed consent, PAR-Q/HHQ, and liability waiver before participating in any personal training sessions. These forms provide information for the fitness professional training the client and it gives the patron the opportunity to acknowledge the potential risks associated with exercise and personal training.
  • To ensure fairness and availability, participants must register for personal training sessions in advance through the URI Campus Recreation website. There are no “walk-in” sessions.
  • Personal trainers will be assigned based on availability and expertise. Participants may request a specific trainer which will be subject to availability and the discretion of the fitness coordinator or graduate assistant.
  • Sessions expire one year after they are purchased. Trainer availability may change from semester to semester, so it can not be guaranteed that the client will have the same trainer. For continuity, clients are encouraged to use their sessions in the semester they were purchased.
  • Participants must cancel personal training sessions at least 24 hours in advance to avoid session loss. Notifications with less than 24 hours’ notice and no-shows result in session forfeiture. Late arrival may lead to adjusted session duration. Delays beyond 15 minutes may be considered no-shows. Clients must adhere to scheduled appointment times; delayed start doesn’t guarantee an extended session. Exceeding a 15-minute delay deems it a no-show and the trainer must clock out afterwards. If no notice is given, and a client doesn’t arrive within 15 minutes, the trainer can be compensated for up to 15 minutes of wait time
  • No refunds can be given by the Department of Campus Recreation. If withdrawing from personal training sessions, a credit (minus a $5 processing fee) will be issued to the client. The client that registered for personal training must use the sessions. Personal training sessions are non-transferable
  • Certain situations and clients may require additional clearance to participate in an exercise program with a personal trainer. This clearance must be made by an appropriate health care professional (e.g., MD, PA, etc.) before beginning exercise.
  • Participants are expected to follow the Fitness Center’s code of conduct, including proper attire, respectful behavior towards trainers and fellow members, and maintaining personal hygiene. There are no exclusive privileges from clients within the recreation center such as reserved spacing or alternative clothing options. All training sessions must be booked during hours of operation. The training staff is required to adhere to all scheduled maintenance closures, sporting event closures, and modified hours during academic exam periods.
  • All users are expected to adhere to the Fitness Center’s facility rules and regulations, including equipment usage, facility hours, and cleanliness standards.
  • By participating in The University of Rhode Island’s personal training services through Campus Recreation, clients must agree to abide by these policies and guidelines.
