Lifeguard Course Regulations & Guidelines, Summer 2020

What does this mean for Lifeguard Class Participants? Participants will receive all details by email after registering, below is an overview.

  • The pool is only open to class participants.
  • Social distancing is required while entering and exiting the facility and during all class breaks.
  • Faces masks are required to enter and exit the facility and while on the pool deck.
  • Upon entering the facility each participant will be screened daily.
  • Participants will enter through the front doors of Mackal Field House.
  • Classes consist of 3 Instructors – 24 student participants (3 pods of 9 people/8 participants + 1 instructor).
  • Participants will have the same partner throughout the duration of the course.  When the rescues require 3-4 participants they will stay within the same pods.
  • Participants will not be able to use the showers except to rinse off prior to entering the pool.
  • Participants will use the same manikin and same rescue tube for the duration of the course.  We will label these items to not cross-contaminate equipment. 
  • Disinfectants will be used to clean all equipment after each class day.
  • The final written exam will be given in the spectator area 6ft apart masks required.
  • Minors will be signed out of each class outside and picked up at the drop off pickup site from the authorized guardian.
  • Participants will exit the area through the Tootell Aquatic doors.

Personal Protective Equipment and Hygiene

Face Masks, Gloves, and Uniforms

  • All Staff will be wearing face masks at all times.
  • Instructors will not be wearing facemasks while teaching in the water.
  • Participants will not be wearing face masks in the pools but will need to wear a face mask on deck at all times.
  • Gloves will be worn when providing first aid.
  • Gloves will be worn while cleaning.
  • Clean masks must be used at each shift.
  • Uniforms must be washed between each shift.

Physical Distancing When appropriate we will social distance at least 6 feet apart while in the facility. Staff and participants need to follow the flow patterns set by facilities in order to minimize contamination. Enforce the flow patterns with the participants for entering and exiting.

Sharing of Equipment Equipment will not be shared but will be assigned. This includes CPR manikins, rescue tubes, AED, resuscitation mask, etc.

Certification Protocols During COVID -19 With the phased-in approach to re-opening the State of Rhode Island, The University of Rhode Island Tootell Aquatic Center continues to hold the health and safety of its students, staff and community members as its highest priority. To maintain that priority, everyone’s cooperation and compliance will be necessary for the Aquatic Center to remain open, offering much-needed certifications.
