My relationship with Dr. Sunak began several years ago when a group of seniors in the beginning stages of their senior project reached out to me to mentor them in their Capstone Design project. Needless to say, this has been a very rewarding experience for Dr. Sunak, myself and most importantly the students.

Dr. Sunak’s efforts in developing and continuing the Capstone Design Program show his genuine dedication to an already strong engineering program and provide important inroads to the industry that is so critical to the success of the program. It has been a great pleasure to work with Dr. Sunak and to see his students become engaged and empowered, year after year, by joining forces with industry and other educators to forge long term relationships. My commitment to the program is personal as I am also a URI Alum.

During my time as a Capstone Technical Director, I have witnessed several groups thrive on the hands-on and real time technical challenges we present to them. Each and every student has expressed to me their admiration and respect that they have for Dr. Sunak without exception. His commitment to the program and his students is exceptional. Dr. Sunak ensures success with the program by having the student’s commitment, through a selection process which includes their reasons and desire for selecting a specific project, which allows him to best match candidates with projects that best fit the student’s skills. This process has provided diverse teams that interact as one within a short period of time; it is very similar to the hiring process! Once the students meet with their Technical Director, Dr. Sunak continues to monitor and engage them. There are weekly project reports that identify issues and provide a platform for evaluation and conversation. The success of the program is evident at the end of each spring semester when they present their final reports, the enthusiasm is evident as each member of the team presents their material.

I have a very high regard for Dr. Sunak and his commitment to the students and the University as well. His program provides an excellent opportunity to showcase both the talent and the capabilities of the students and the University. I look forward to a long and continued relationship with Dr. Sunak and the Capstone Design Program.
