About this image: Cells of the common phytoplankton dinoflagellate Gonyaulax. The original, grayscale image was created with an electron scanning microscope by GSO Professor Emeritus Paul E. Hargraves, who devoted his career (1962-2015) to documenting phytoplankton and microalgae on the U.S. East Coast. Color was added in collaboration with artist Fay G. Darling of Barrington, R.I.
