Academics

Annual Report 2020

Undoubtedly, the positive innovations in curriculum delivery that developed this year will have a place in post-pandemic academic operations.

In the 2019-2020 Academic Year, 12 students earned advanced degrees (4 Ph.D., 4 Master of Science and 4 Master of Oceanography). It was a very strong year for recruiting as GSO welcomed 33 students this fall (13 Ph.D., 8 Master of Science and 13 Master of Oceanography). In total, 89 students are currently enrolled in graduate-degree programs.

In the fall of 2019, Assistant Professor Veronique Oldham and Lecturer Martha McConnell joined the faculty. Professor John King retired in spring, 2020, after 39 years of service.

In March, 2020, to respond to the pandemic and continue its academic mission, GSO abruptly transitioned classes, seminars, and thesis and dissertation defenses to online delivery and formats.

The 33rd Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Oceanography (SURFO), sponsored by the National Science Foundation, was delivered online with great success.

Network communications enabled expansion of classrooms and seminars by involving speakers from around the world who shared their expertise.
