Overview

The Biomechanics and Wearables Laboratory (BWL) group shares a physical with the MoVR Laboratory group directed by Dr. Susan D’Andrea. The physical space includes approximately 1000 ft2 of dedicated space for biomechanics data capture/analysis and an additional 200 ft2 for clinical patient evaluations. See below for specific technology contained within our laboratory space as well as shared facilities.

Biomechanics Laboratory

Contained within the Biomechanics Laboratory space are several critical pieces of equipment including:

  • 8 camera Qualisys Optical Motion Capture System (>250 samples per second)
  • Bertec Split-Belt Force Plate Instrumented Treadmill (>1000 samples per second)
  • 16 APDM v2 Wireless 9-DOF Wearable Inertial Measurement Units (data logging & streaming)
  • XSENS MVN Full Body Inertial Suit
  • 9 Pairs of Loadsol Force Instrumented Wireless Shoe Insoles (3 zones per insole: rear-, mid-, fore-foot)
  • Visual 3D Biomechanical Modeling Software
  • Microsoft HoloLens
  • Virtual Reality Display and Software
  • 8 channel Delsys Trigno EMG system
  • Equipment to seamlessly, temporally interface Qualisys cameras, EMG, force instrumentation, & wearables
  • Creality Ender-3, 3D Printer (180mm/s print speed, ±0.1mm accuracy)
  • MATLAB & LabView software suites
  • SPSS Statistical Software

Human Performance Laboratory

  • Biodex Dynamometer → Clinical measures of muscle strength
  • Parvo and Jager Metabolic Carts → Measure O2 consumption, CO2 production, and energy expenditure
  • Near Infrared Spectrometer → Measure blood flow and O2 consumption in muscles
  • 12 Lead ECG → Cardiovascular health
  • Biosway → Balance assessment
  • Lactate Meters → Evaluate blood lactate
  • Exercise equipment → Trackmaster treadmills, Wingate cycle ergometers, Power cycle

Body Composition Laboratory

  • The Bod Pod → Gold standard evaluation for body composition
  • InBody → Bioelectrical impedance measurement of body composition
  • DEXA scanner → Bone density measurement
  • Complete weight room and exercise facility; equipment includes treadmills, cycles, and weight machines
