Admission to the music program requires a successful audition as well as acceptance to the University.
Students planning to major, minor, or seek a scholarship in music are required to audition in their principal performing area. Auditions can happen before or after your application to the University is submitted.
There are two required parts to the audition process for all majors and minors:
- Performance Audition (Required): Auditions are juried performances before music faculty members and are used to determine your level of ability. (See details below.)
- Placement Theory Examination (Required): You’ll also take a placement theory test involving written theory.
- Keyboard Placement Examination (Optional): For those with keyboard experience, it is possible to take a keyboard placement examination to determine where you might begin the class piano sequence required of all music majors.
In addition, the following is a required part of the audition process for those interested in pursuing bachelor’s degrees in music education or music therapy:
- At the audition, you will have a brief one-on-one conversation with a faculty member in the field of study. This conversation will cover basic competencies required and will provide a special opportunity for you and the faculty member to get to know one another prior to any potential offer of admission.
Audition Reservation
- You must submit an Audition Form at least two weeks before your requested audition date (dates are not guaranteed).
- You will receive a confirmed reservation at least one week in advance of the audition date.
Recorded Auditions
If an on-campus audition is not possible for you due to you living 400 or more miles from URI, you may submit a video for your audition. You will still need to submit an Audition Form and follow the requirements (provided below).
