A good “why” is like a key. It has the ability to unlock your motivation, direction, and career. Understanding why you want to pursue a job, leave a job, or move up in your job keeps your goal targeted and allows you to communicate powerfully to others. Try this exercise: Choose one of the following “why” questions and write for five minutes: Why am I unsatisfied in my current role? Why do I want to make a change? Why do I want to pursue this major or job? Why have I not achieved my goal yet? (Keep writing even if you feel like you already have the answer or nothing to write!)
