Keeping Watch on Chronic Disease
A wristwatch, a phone and the cloud will revolutionize how we monitor and treat chronic health conditions, says biomedical engineering Assistant Professor Kunal Mankodiya. He and two graduate students, inspired by loved ones—one of the team has a brother with epilepsy, another a father who has suffered a heart attack—are developing software that allows a smartphone to team up with the new, readily available breed of smartwatches to monitor the wearer’s vital signs. Armed with the data, doctors can adjust medication or program a computer to automatically alert the patient to change dosage or delay getting behind the wheel of a car.
