The URI Equestrian team competes in Zone 1, Region 1 of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). The IHSA was established to promote collegiate competition for riders of any skill level, regardless of financial status. Students compete individually and as a team throughout the season. The IHSA promotes development in equitation skills, team enthusiasm, and sportsmanship. During the regular season, URI competes against Assumption College, Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, Roger Williams University, College of the Holy Cross, Clark University, Rhode Island College, Becker College, Salve Regina, and UMass Dartmouth.

Do you hold tryouts?
- We hold something called a placement ride. We do not cut people from the team, unless we exceed our limit of 42, so the placement ride allows us to determine which division you will be placed in for showing.
When are tryouts?
- Tryouts are the first or second week of the Fall Semester.
What gear is required for tryouts?
- Long Pants
- Heeled Shoes
How many athletes do you keep on your roster?
- No more than 42
How many athletes do you anticipate adding after tryouts?
- ~20
How often does your team practice?
- We practice at least once per week.
Where does your team practice/play/compete?
- We practice at Hunter Ridge Farm in Ashaway, RI. We compete at a few different barns throughout New England.
How far does your team travel for competitions?
- Normally, travel is less than an hour; however, as the season progresses, we travel farther to compete against different teams.
Who does your team compete against?
- Throughout the regular season we compete against Johnson and Whales University, Brown, RIC, Assumption, Salve Regina, Roger Williams University.
How do athletes get to games?
- We carpool using personal vehicles.

- Yes. Our annual dues are $600 per rider.
Aside from practices and competitions, what other commitments are expected from members of the team?
- Outside of competitions, we host fundraising events and team-building activities. We also expect team members to help care for the horses we ride.

- We are a very competitive team. Every year, we try to make it to Nationals for IHSA.
