Here are some tips on how to help:
- Listen without judgment – Offer a safe space for them to talk. Avoid dismissing their feelings or trying to “fix” things.
- Ask directly about suicide – If you’re concerned, ask, “Are you thinking about hurting yourself?” This can help them feel seen and supported.
- Encourage professional help – Suggest they reach out to a counselor, crisis hotline, or medical professional. Offer to help them find resources.
- Stay connected – Check in regularly, offer company, and help them feel less alone.
- Know when to seek immediate help – If they have a plan or seem at imminent risk, call emergency services or take them to the nearest hospital.
