Sixty years ago, the University of Rhode Island established the Graduate School of Oceanography on the shores of Narragansett Bay. GSO’s campus is built on the traditional land of the Narragansett Nation.

In 1962, John A. Knauss, GSO’s first dean, arrived.

In 1966, GSO students resided at Ruggles House on URI’s main campus.

In 1975, GSO faculty assembled on the steps of Claiborne Pell Library.

In 2005, R/V *Endeavor* began hosting the Rhode Island Teachers at Sea program.

Live, from Narragansett Bay...

On July 1, 2020 “Ocean Classroom Live” celebrated GSO’s 60th anniversary with a special program. GSO@60: Looking back, looking forward was a conversation with professors Rebecca Robinson, Veronique Oldham, Thomas Rossby and Candace Oviatt (Ph.D. 1967). They shared inspiring stories of marine science of the past and prognoses for where ocean exploration and discovery may take us in the future.
