Dr. Bruce Corliss Named GSO’s New Dean

Dr. Bruce Corliss has accepted the position of Dean of the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island. He comes to GSO from Duke University, where he was Director of the Duke/University of North Carolina Oceanographic Consortium and also served as Chair of the Department of Geology, the Interim Chair of the Division of Earth and Ocean Sciences, and the senior Assistant Dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. Dr. Corliss also is chair of the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS), an organization of 61 marine science-focused institutions that advises federal agencies on oceanographic research infrastructure facilities and the national fleet. The UNOLS national office is on the Bay Campus.

Dr. Corliss received his Master’s degree in Oceanography from GSO in 1973, and his Ph.D. in Oceanography from GSO in 1978. His research experience lies in development of paleoclimatic proxies; deep-sea benthic foraminifera; micropaleontology; Cenozoic paleoceanography, and deep-sea diversity.
