Scope and Content Note
The series contains records regarding women’ issues concerning employment, child care, business, domestic violence, and rape. The records consist of reports, publications, hearing transcripts, correspondence, biographical notes, and photographs. The records also include bills, press releases, Chafee speeches, conference presentations, conference attendee mailing lists, and invitations to speakers.
Subjects include:
Rhode Island Women Conferences (1988-1992), examining the legal and economic aspects of divorce, child care, child support, alimony, and women in the labor market. The conferences were sponsored by Senator Chafee and held at the Omni Biltmore Hotel in Providence, RI.
The Violence Against Women Act (1994), containing reports, statistical data, and news articles concerning the appropriation of federal funding to states for increasing efforts to reduce domestic violence and violence against women. The bill allowed for funds to be used for training police, prosecutors, and judges in the area of domestic and gender-based violence. It also allotted funding for victim services programs, women’s shelters, prevention programs, and hotline services. In addition, the bill extended rape shield laws, required states to enforce restraining orders, and required confidentiality restrictions for addresses of shelters and abused persons.
Women in Business Conference (1984-1989), regarding the Reagan Administration’s national initiative to provide business skills training to women entrepreneurs and improve the business environment in the public and private sectors for women business owners. The records include conference agenda, press releases, news articles, panelist biographies, panelist correspondence with Chafee, and reports from the Small Business Administration.

Scope and Content Note
The series contains records related to the Community and Family Living Act and it’s amendments. The bill provides services and supplemental income for individuals who have severe developmental or physical disabilities. The records consist of reports, handbooks, bills, state-by-state constituent correspondence to Senator Chafee, and speaking invitations.

Condom Availability (1992), concerning legislative efforts to disallow condom availability programs in public schools intended to help prevent the spread of HIV.
Freedom of Choice Act (1991-1994), regarding efforts to codify the Roe v. Wade decision in order to protect the reproductive rights of women. The series include the restoration of federal funding for abortion services for women on Medicaid, and the nullification of restrictions put on abortion services during the Reagan Administration.
Title X Regulations (1970-1995) prohibiting the use of federal funds to family planning programs that provide abortion services.
