Upcoming Events

September 6th, 6 PM- 60th Annual Boat Burning

GSO’s Annual Boat Burning event, held on the GSO Beach the first Friday of every fall semester! We will welcome new students and faculty, and celebrate the new academic year with the larger Narragansett community. This huge beach side party is a great way to meet everyone at GSO, as well as meet families and friends of students and faculty. There’s a beach BBQ, with burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, and lots of food made by the students. And of course, the famous burning of a boat, donated by the community!what more would you want to do on a Fridaynight?! Don’t forget to bring your own reusable plate, cup, cutlery, and napkins for the event, as
C&M would like to minimize waste at Boat Burning now, and moving forward!

This event is largely supported by local businesses, who donate food, beverages, and raffle prizes. We thank all the local businesses who support GSO, and can’t wait for you all to hear about them at the event. Rain date September 13.

September 29th, 12 PM- Outdoor Sunday

Come pick apples and hang out with your fellow students at the East Farm, a research farm hosted by URI (1 E Farm Rd, Kingston, RI 02881)! Some apples will go to URI kitchens and food pantries, which are amazing resources to students. But of course, you’ll be able to take some home with you, to make all your seasonal fall treats! Rain date October 6. More details to come on September 16, so keep an eye out.

Mission

Chowder and Marching (C&M) is a student organization at the University of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay Campus, whose major objective is to address all GSOE (Graduate School of Oceanography and Ocean Engineering) students’ professional, academic, and social needs and concerns.

C&M is heavily involved in the social environment of the Bay Campus, sponsoring and organizing GSOE activities such as Boat Burning, barbecues, trivia, and more throughout the year. We provide a framework which enhances communication between GSOE students, faculty, and administration, enabling us to identify and address specific issues of concern to students.

C&M determines its specific goals based on the input of the student body. Progress on these goals is reported and discussed at hour-long meetings held on a weekly basis. The organization is led by an Executive Committee elected annually by peers. The primary source of revenue for the Society comes from the generous donations of Faculty, Students, and Alumni. Valid expenditures of these funds are those which promote the goals of C&M.
