In addition to preparation for veterinary school, the major is designed to prepare students for employment in the animal science, animal biotechnology, companion animal care, livestock and exotic animal management professions.

The B. S. Biological Sciences degree offers rigorous training in biology and related sciences such as chemistry, math, and physics. Our flexible program allows students to specialize in plant or animal biology and in subdisciplines such as ecology, evolution, physiology, cell or developmental biology, with many opportunities to participate in research and independent study.

The B. A. in Biology is a liberal arts degree which serves students who wish to combine the study of biology with a second major or strong Minor as a means of gaining broader training for careers in areas needing scientific knowledge and other background or skills such as education, environmental law, science journalism or wildlife photography.

The major in Cell and Molecular Biology, with tracks in biochemistry, microbiology and biotechnology, provides students with in-depth knowledge and training in cellular and molecular processes occurring in all organisms. These are the foundation for understanding how organisms function in and affect environments and interact with other organisms. Education and training opportunities include laboratory research and internship opportunities. The major prepares students for graduate and professional schools, and careers in environmental sciences, biotechnology and governmental environment-related agencies.

The major in Plant Sciences prepares undergraduate students for professional careers in both the public and private sectors. Flexible course requirements allow students to develop individual areas of concentration and prepare for a variety of positions after graduation.

Environmental Science and Management is a multi-disciplinary major, incorporating course work in water resources, wetland ecology, wildlife biology, soil science, forestry, and land use/environmental quality relationships with other disciplines.

Obtain a basic foundation in geology, with an option to specialize in geological oceanography. Opportunities for time on a research vessel, fieldwork, and laboratory research experience. Prepares students for careers in private industry, government, non-profit work, and education.

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Rhode Island offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Biotechnology. Biotechnology is commonly defined as the use of biological principles for the betterment of mankind.

The major in Cell and Molecular Biology, with tracks in biochemistry, microbiology and biotechnology, gives students a strong knowledge of the cellular and molecular processes occurring in all organisms, which is the foundation for physiology, disease, medicine and biotechnology. The major in Medical Laboratory Science has two tracks. The Medical Laboratory Science Track includes a one-year, accredited internship at several regional medical centers and prepares you to become a certified/licensed Medical Laboratory Scientist. It prepares you for careers in the medical laboratory, public health, and medical device industries. The Biotechnology Manufacturing Track, which is based at the URI Providence Biotechnology Center, has a full-time, one-semester internship at a regional life sciences company. It prepares you for careers in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and biomedical research industries. The major also prepares you for graduate or professional school.

The major in Molecular Neuroscience is designed for students interested in studying the cellular and molecular mechanisms of nervous system function, development, and disease. This major provides preparation for graduate programs in neuroscience, biomedical sciences or cell and molecular biology, medical school, advanced degrees in allied health professions, and employment in academic, pharmaceutical, or government laboratories.

The aquaculture program at the University of Rhode Island, begun in 1969 and administered by the Department of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences (FAVS), is one of the oldest aquaculture programs in the northeastern United States. Students in our aquaculture program have come from throughout the United States and from many foreign countries.

The B. S. Marine Biology is designed for students who plan to pursue marine biology at a professional level or who wish to use their training and expertise in a wide range of careers. Learn economic concepts to understand why our earth’s natural resources are under threat, and what we can do to address these threats. Gain tools to assess how environmental policies and green markets (or not work!) Prepare for jobs in green businesses, consulting, nonprofit organizations and the government sector.

Students completing this interdisciplinary program will graduate with the skills and knowledge needed to contribute to the sustainable development, production, harvesting, management, and utilization of terrestrial and aquatic microorganisms, plants and animals by society worldwide.

Marine Biology
At least 20 credits, which includes 8 credits of General Biology (BIO 101/103 and 102/104, or equivalent, e.g., AP), Marine Biology (BIO 360) and at least 8 additional credits at the 200-level or above, chosen from among courses counted as marine biology electives for the B.S. Marine Biology degree. A maximum of 3 credits in research (e.g., BIO 491, 492) may be counted towards the minor. At least half of the credits for the minor must be earned at URI. A minimum GPA of 2.00 must be earned in the credits required for the minor.
Students from any college may develop a minor from one of the majors offered by the College of the Environment & Life Sciences.
