Student-Alum Networking Seminar – James Maughan – “How GSO Research led to Environmental Consulting which led to a Multifaceted Environmental Advocacy, Academic, and Policy Career”

The “Student-Alum Networking Series” is an opportunity for our students and recent graduates to hear from our alums about the work they are doing and what their career path has been. Our fourth alum speaker on May 24 , 2021 was Jamie (James) Maughan who received his Ph.D. from GSO in 1986. He worked with GSO Professor Candace Oviatt (who herself is an alum Ph.D. 1967) and she introduced him.

Jamie talked on “How GSO Research led to Environmental Consulting which led to a Multifaceted Environmental Advocacy, Academic, and Policy Career.” He is now largely retired but his consulting career has spanned over 40 years. He worked for CH2M Hill, as vice president and Metcalf and Eddy, two of the largest and most respected environmental/engineering consulting firms in the world. He addressed environmental issues from the Arctic to the Nile Delta to the heights of the Andes and many places in-between. This has included developing major infrastructure projects while maximizing environmental and public health benefits and minimizing adverse impacts.
