Why URI?

Undergraduate Admission

The first thing you will need to determine is your eligibility to apply either as a first-year or transfer student. We encourage everyone to review the application requirements for first-year and transfer.

First Year Students

You are considered a first-year student applicant if you are:

  • a first-time college student who has graduated from high school and never enrolled in college
  • a first-time college student who has been home-schooled
  • a first-time college student who has attended high school and college during the same time period (dual enrollment) or has taken some college courses during high school

Your application will be reviewed when the Office of Admission has received all of these materials:

  • A completed Common Application
  • Official high school transcript (preferably through the Common Application)
  • We waive the application fee for ALL U.S. military Veteran undergraduate applicants. Ensure that you identify as a Veteran on the Common Application. (Dependents of veterans are not eligible for the application fee waiver.)
  • Essay (pharmacy applicants must include an additional paragraph explaining their choice of major)

Transfer Students

Your application will be reviewed when the Office of Admission has received all of these materials:

  • Please refer to this website for Transfer Students. 
  • We waive the application fee for ALL U.S. military Veteran undergraduate applicants. Ensure that you identify as a Veteran on the Common Application.
  • Official transcripts must be sent to us electronically by the institution. Personally emailed transcripts are unofficial and we cannot use them. Please have your institution email official transcripts to transferadmission@uri.edu.
  • Official high school transcript, unless you have an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a subject similar in content to what is offered at URI.
  • If you have more than 60 credits you must choose a major other than “Undecided.”

 

Transfer Admission Requirement:

If you have attempted at least 24 transferable credits:

You must earn a minimum 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), be in good standing and eligible to return to institutions attended previously. In addition, you must meet basic college-preparatory unit requirements (typically completed in high school): 4 in English, 3 in math (Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry), 2 in science, 2 in history/social science, and 2 units in the same foreign language.

If you have attempted fewer than 24 transferable credits:

You must earn a minimum 2.8 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), be in good standing and eligible to return to institutions previously attended. You must also meet all first-year admission requirements.

If you have previously been denied admission to URI, you must first earn 24 transferable credits with at least a 2.5 GPA to be considered again for admission. 

 

Reminder: Your credits will be evaluated by the Academic Colleges within 21 days of acceptance. Admitted students with questions about credits should contact the Transfer Resource Center.

**If you have previously received GI Bill® benefits while attending another institution: You must complete a Request for Change of Program of Place of Training (VA Form 22-1995) or Request for change of Program or Place or Training Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (VA Form 22-5495). Q: What happens after I apply?

You should receive an email confirmation once you submit the Transfer Common Application. Then we’ll send an email that includes information about our application review process and instructions on how to check the status of your application online.

It will take several weeks for the Admissions Team to review your application. We appreciate your patience and encourage you to check your status regularly. 

Q: How do I apply for in-state tuition? 

As a GI Bill® recipient you may qualify for in-state tuition. To see if you are eligible, refer to the state’s Residency Policy. If you feel you qualify for in-state tuition, please complete the Application for Rhode Island Military/Veteran Residency for Tuition Purposes.

Q: Can I email my application for in-state residency while I apply, OR prior to the start of my first semester, OR during my first semester? 

Yes! You may send your application to vabenefits-group@uri.edu.

Q: What if I need to defer my enrollment due to military service or medical need?

Students admitted to the University of Rhode Island may request to defer their matriculation for one semester. Your request must be in writing and emailed to Debbie Suggs at admission@uri.edu with a subject line of “Deferral Request.” URI routinely grants these requests, and students will receive written notification of deferral approval. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Requests for year-long deferrals are only granted in cases of military service, medical issues, or documented gap years.
