The Inner Space Center at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography is featured in “New Frontiers in Ocean Exploration: The E/V Nautilus and NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer 2011 Field Season,” a supplement to the March 2012 issue of Oceanography, the official magazine of the Oceanography Society.

The well-illustrated supplement profiles the expeditions of the E/V Nautilus in the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea, and the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer (homeported at Quonset, RI) in the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic Ocean. Articles describe the state of the art technology resident in the ships and remotely operated vehicles, and the communications that make telepresence possible. Telepresence enables shore-based scientists to participate in the at-sea explorations in real time. Education and outreach, detailed in the supplement, also uses telepresence to bring the science from the field into “classrooms, newsrooms, and living rooms.”
