SURFO Program

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Oceanography (SURFO) Program

(5 June to 10 August 2023)

SURFO 2023 Application;Deadline: February 6, 2023

The Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) at the University of Rhode Island remains committed to providing an exciting and enriching undergraduate research experience. We are soliciting and accepting applications pending our Site-REU proposal being once again supported by the National Science Foundation. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot guarantee the summer 2023 SURFO program will occur in-residence at GSO. We are currently planning for an in-person program, but students should be aware that the SURFO program may be shifted to a hybrid program (as we did in 2021) or a virtual program (as we did in 2020) at any time between now and summer 2023. The decision is not ours alone to make as we must observe State and University social-distancing and vaccination policies. We are closely following the developing situation surrounding the spread of COVID-19 and its variants, and you should expect to provide proof of vaccination. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding during this time and look forward to reviewing your application.

Funded by the National Science Foundation.

Funding for this REU site is provided by the National Science Foundation’s Division of Ocean Science’s located in Alexandria, VA (NSF OCE-1757572 and 1950586). The NSF contact for this program is Elizabeth Rom.
