Crop load recommendations; Orchard Radar not ready 5.5.14
For those of you with young (<5 years old) apple trees, there is a maximum number of fruit you should allow to develop on your trees so you don’t over-crop and stunt your trees. This research was conducted in New York by Terence Robinson. For weaker cultivars, fewer fruit should be allowed to grow on a tree than on a more vigorous cultivar. See the chart at this Penn State site.
I learned this afternoon that Orchard Radar is not actually ready to be used yet! I’ll send out an email when Glen Koehler tells me it is all set. Sorry! In the mean time use Cornell’s NEWA

The next rain event will likely release a lot of ascospores. Apple trees should be protected with a fungicide before the next rain.
